The tribal organisation of the Corpeni
Lot 720
PHRYGIA. Eucarpeia. Julia Augusta (Livia), Augusta, 14-29. AE (Bronze, 13 mm, 2.81 g, 12 h), Apphia ierea. ΣEBAΣTH Draped bust of Livia to right. Rev. EYKAP/ΠITIKOY - AΠΦIA / IEPHA in four lines. BMC 14. RPC I 3160. Rare. Some deposits, otherwise, very fine.

The unusual ethnic EYKAPΠITIKON has led to the suggestion that these early Provincial coins were struck before the tribal organization of the Corpeni was reorganized as the polis Eucarpeia (RPC p. 511). No further coins were struck before the later reign of Hadrian, when the next emission carries the ethnic EYKAPΠEIA, suggesting that the foundation of the polis took place somewhen between Tiberius and Hadrian
